As day wanes into night, a photographer is drawn to the horizon’s golden glow.
Photographer Josiah Patterson is no stranger to sunsets. “In high school, we used to surf Mākaha Beach every day after school, and I remember wanting the sun to stay up just a little longer so I could surf more.” Yet as the sun tracked its path from sky to sea, eventually slipping below the horizon, any disappointment over the day’s end was sweetly tempered by the beauty that surrounded him: a glittering ocean, the Waiʻanae Mountain Range draped in gold.
In these snapshots of classic West Side sunsets, Patterson captures the gilded interlude between day and dusk—and the moments found within.
